Heat Pump

Trane heat pump offers homeowners an efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat and cool their home. Unlike a furnace, a heat pump does not burn fuel to produce heat. Heat pumps use surrounding heat from the outside air and move it into the home.


The heat pump can operate as the main source of heat most days of winter. The ability of the heat pump to transfer heat from outside to your home is called the ‘unit capacity’. The unit capacity depends on the outdoor temperature. A gas furnace or electric air handler can be configured to act as a backup if the heat pump cannot supply all the heat required.


The XR and XLi series are the most common heat pump models. More information about these models can be found in the Air Conditioning page, except a heat pump would include a heating efficiency rating as well (HSPF).

Trane XLi Heat Pumps

System efficiency is measured in SEER, (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). Similar to miles per gallon in a car, SEER is a measure of the overall efficiency of a complete heating and cooling system on a seasonal basis. To measure the efficiency of heat pumps specifically, HSPF is used. The higher the SEER and HSPF, the greater the system’s energy efficiency, and the lower the overall carbon footprint of your household.


Two-stage heating and cooling prevent temperature swings, while providing the efficiency of up to 18.0 SEER and up to 9.5 HSPF. Potentially ENERGY STAR® qualified when installed as part of a matched Trane system.


With up to 16.25 SEER and 9.7 HSPF, the XL15i is hardworking, efficient, quiet, and potentially ENERGY STAR® qualified when installed as part of a matched Trane system.

By lowering output capacity and operating speed, they provide efficient and consistent comfort. Additionally, TruComfort™ heat pumps are able to slow fan speeds down as outdoor temperatures drop to reduce cold spots and use of supplemental heat. What’s more, sound levels are an impressive 55 dB on an air conditioner and 54 dB on a heat pump. For sound comparison, a typical home refrigerator operates at 45 dB.
